FEBRUARY 2024
February 2024

  • A short history of Post and Go , Part One. The  removal of Post and Go machines from service at the end of 2023, marked the end of a era for collectors of Great Britain. Michael L. Goodman, editor of Stamp Lover sketches the origins of Post and Go and how they first appeared in 2008  ( sorry  , a misprint in the text states 1998 by mistake ) . His first article describes the non pictorial labels, the second one due in April will deal with  pictorial labels and the final part in June will deal with labels issued from machines at museums and other places of interest. The first instalment also includes an introduction by Richard West MBE, a former editor of Stamp Lover.

  • Torres the forger and the British colonial key type issues; Gerhard Lang-Valchs examines how Spanish master forger Placido Ramon de Torres got to work on the British colonial stamps showing the head of Queen Victoria

  • Talismanic Numbers of early Sudan covers. Malcolm Coe  describes the covers he showed on line last December and how letter writers in Sudan wrote Islamic  talismatic numbers on covers  as a sign of good luck. Malcolm will show more Sudan material at our  virtual meeting of 10 June 2024.
    .
  • Meeting Reports - Kenya Uganda and Tanganyika varieties: Virtual meeting of Monday 11 December 2023. Roger  Gilbert showed in great detail flaws and varieties on issues of British East Africa and  KUT. In the second half Malcolm Coe showed Sudan covers, the subject of the feature listed above, Keith Johnson showed some Fanning Island in the Pacific, while Peter  Mellor showed some commercial covers which all told stories.

London meeting of 13 January 2024 - Argentina, The annual Peter Brack Memorial Display, given by Ian King.  Ian King's display treated us to almost every definitive issue of Argentina from 1858 to the present. To show everything “in the flesh” would have filled the meeting room, so he used Powerpoint as well as showing stamps on frames. He began with early crude impe rforate issues, then the “Rivadavias” named after the national hero depicted on the stamps. There was a complete set of the Eva Peron issue of 1952, and lots of pictorials. Post war inflation and repeated revaluations of the peso meant the “noughts” disappeared off the stamp denominations at regular intervals, only to reappear with further inflation. The recent 2023 1000 peso definitives only have a face value equivalent to one US dollar.
