February 2023

  • 90 years of images of Queen Elizabeth II: From little Princess to longest reigning monarch, how the Queen was depicted on stamps of Newfoundland and Canada for 90 years. This  first part of a three part feature by the editor covers the years 1932 to 1952.

  • An Act of Revenge, curious catalogue illustrations, by Gerhard Lang-Valchs: How master forger Placido Torres provided ugly and distorted illustrations for the 19th Century Freidl stamp catalogue, as he felt he was underpaid, is the subject of this feature by Torres's biographer.

  • Mystery of a Coronation souvenir: An appeal for more information on a 1937 Coronation souvenir, a photo of which appears with some text.

  • The Burin of Czeslaw Slania: Flavia del Giudice highlights some  of the work of this prolific stamp engraver. This feature is a sort of curtain raiser to the virtual display  by Terry Wagg to the NPS in February.
     
  • Meeting reports:The Life and Times of the 1Fr50 Petaiu ,a virtual display in December by Mick Bister which included rare  postal history from  a dark and controversial period of France's wartime past.Fossils and Dinosaurs:The London display held in January by Bob Higgins who not only brought along stamps but some real fossils as well !

  • Obituary: John Shaw FRPSL. John was not an NPS member but delivered the first ever Peter Brack Memorial lecture in October 2017. On the subject of Paraguay.Peter Brack left a legacy to the NPS on condition that there is an annual lecture and display on Central and South America.

  • Editor's column: Michael L. Goodman discusses Heavy Metal, Stanley Gibbons , and introduces “Christmas capers”.

  • President's Piece: Peter Mellor highlights our on-line meetings and encourages more members to “tune in “.

  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among books reviewed  this issue are  SG Part 1 2023, British Commonwealth and Empire, SG Portugal and Colonies , and Falkland Islands - Sheet Numbered Stamps of the King George VI Period by High Osborne, FRPSL.

  • 90 years of images of Queen Elizabeth II: The second part of this three part feature by Michael L. Goodman covers the period from the Coronation in 1953 to the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

  • The Norse Vikings in North America, and the mysterious "Vinland" , a saga on stamps by James R Taylor, FRPSC. Five centuries before Columbus, the Norse Vikings set foot in North America, and this article shows how their exploits have been commemorated in stamps.

  • How to get the most out of an on-line Auction: Barbara Fedra of Philasearch offers some advice.
     
     
  • Ukrainian War Stamps -  Christopher Oliver, FRPSL looks at the way in which the war in Ukraine has been reflected in stamps issued by the Ukraine and some of its allies, together with labels that have appeared cleverly likening Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler.

  • Meeting reports:The Slania Engravings - the display given to the February 2023 On-line meeting by Terry Wagg, FRPSL  and British West Africa Airmails given by Barbara Priddy at the London Meeting on 11th March 2023.

  • Newsmix: A report on the exhibition at the Postal Museum Display telling the story of British definitives through to the new stamps of  the King Charles III, and the demise of the Philatelic Exporter
    .
  • New Issues - A Flying departure for the Queen's Image - The New British Stamps marking the Centenary of the Flying Scots are the final GB commemoratives to bear the silhouette image of the late Queen..
  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among books reviewed  this issue are  Stanley Gibbons "Collect British Stamps 74th ed. 2023, Falkland Islands , The 1935 Silver Jubilee King George V issue by Ralph Riddell-Carre, and Air Crash Mail of the World, edited by Ken Sanford.

This final part of a three part feature by the editor covers the years 1977 to 2022,from the defintiives which followed the Silver Jubilee to the final stamp of her reign issued for the Platinum Jubilee.

  • Forensic Philately and the use of a Video Spectral Comparator , by Paul Leonard BSC(Hons),CSci, FRPSL. How the new video microscope used by the Royal Philatelic Society Expert Committee helps determine whether items are genuine or forgeries or have defects.
     
  • The Annual Stuart Rossiter Memorial Lecture:Tips from an insider on how to buy and sell at auctions, Lecture by Dieter Michelson FRPSL, report by the editor. The managing director of the Heinrich Kohler auction house describes how collectors can make the most of the auction process and some of the pitfalls to look out for.

  • Meeting reports:The Labuan Queen's head stamps 1879-86 ,a virtual display in April  by Dr Jon Higgins FRPSL looked at how the British came to control this island off Borneo and how it began to issue stamps. Many rare items were included in this display such as provisional surcharges and die proofs.  Dr Higgins is expected to continue the philatelic history of Labuan with another display this autumn. The  President's display held in London in May was the first ever by Peter Mellor in this role. For the first half Peter showed Farthing stamps and their usage. This was mainly British West Indies and Malta material but there were also stamps produced by a GB private letter carrier. The second half was devoted to “Dear Doctor”  postcards sent from far and wide by pharmaceutical companies promoting their drugs to doctors.

  • Newmix, obituary for Jeffery Matthews CBE who designed many GB stamp issues and devised the “Machin palette” . New website for American Stamp Club of GB and new exhibition at the Royal.

  • Index to British Philatelic Press :The regular  May index to the British Philatelic Press, covering the period July to December 2022. Compiled by Rodney Knight.

  • Editor's column: Michael L. Goodman discusses his five minutes of fame on GB television news, as well as quackery and spam.

  • President's Piece :Peter Mellor laments the lack of second and first class Coronation stamps in booklets which could be readily available to the public.

  • Book Reviews - Detailed and informative reviews are a regular feature of the magazine. Among books reviewed  this issue is the latest SG Germany Catalogue, a new edition
