The Rowland Hill Awards
Each year The Rowland Hill Awards are presented to recognise particular achievement in the philatelic world, focusing especially on Initiative, Enterprise and Innovation. The awards for 2004 were presented in London during a lunch held at the Blueprint Café, close to Tower Bridge overlooking the River Thames. The awards are sponsored by Royal Mail, and supported by the British Philatelic Trust and the Philatelic Traders Society.

In the section dedicated to the BPT Initiative Awards, Young Collector of the Year went to Jacob Whittle for his imaginative exhibit ‘Grand Prix – The Ultimate Race’. The runners-up were Simon Moorcroft and Lukshana
Jeyaruban.

The Authorship and Research Award went to Kenneth Clark for ‘The History and Postal History of Japan’s Wars’. In this category the runners-up were Ken Lewis and Nicholas
Courteney.

The award for Society Work was presented to Southampton and District Philatelic Society, with the runners-up being the Hampshire Philatelic Federation and the GB Decimal Stamp Book Study Circle.
The PTS Enterprise Award for Personal Contribution went to Martin Townsend for the personal integrity he has shown over many years.
In the Royal Mail Innovation Awards, that for Journalistic Excellence in the Print and Broadcast Media went to Matt Roper of
The Mirror, with the runner-up being Jeremy Page of The Times.
The award for Journalistic Excellence in Philatelic Writing was awarded jointly to Richard Lockyer and Glenn Morgan, with the runner-up being Martin Robinson.
The Newton Road Post Office branch in Carlisle won the award for Post Office Excellence, with the runners-up being Downlands Post Office branch, Worthing, and West Byfleet Post Office branch.
The award for Outstanding Contribution was presented to Jeffery Matthews, MBE, in recognition of his stamp design work for Royal Mail which goes back over 40 years, his first adopted designs being for the 20th anniversary of the United Nations in 1965. At the same time he was also presented with the Phillips Gold Medal for Stamp Design, which is awarded once every five years.
