Established in 1981 by The Post Office,
from which it is independent, the Trust received charitable status in 1983. As
an educational charity, its objects are the promotion of "the study,
research and dissemination of knowledge" in the philatelic arena. It
undertakes this in a variety of ways, mainly by various forms of financial
support over as wide a field of activity as possible whilst remaining within
its means and objects.
The original endowment by The Post Office in 1981 came from the excess proceeds
of the premiums on the three miniature sheets issued in connection with the
international stamp exhibition in London in 1980. The miniature sheets were
issued at a price higher than face value, and the premium was intended to
finance London 1980. However, the amount raised was considerably more than
expected and was applied by The Post Office to set up the Trust.
A similar exercise in 1990, to finance Stamp World London 90, produced a
(smaller) surplus which was also given to the Trust. In recent years Royal Mail
has made additional annual grants to support specific development activities,
particularly in the youth sector.
With the balance of the endowments the Trust has followed a prudent investment
strategy, and in so doing has been able to make substantial grants and give
other support across a wide range of philatelic activity in the United Kingdom.
